Eye Shadow Pencils Spend or Save

Eye Shadow Pencils Spend or SaveI love an eye shadow pencil. They make application so easy, they travel well and are often a great base for eye shadows if you need to give them a bit of oomph or longevity. You can use them as an eyes shadow or straight liner, or as a blended liner or base. They make for a great, quick and easy smokey eye too. But they not only vary wildly in quality but also in price. So I've gathered together all the ones that I've either been using for a while myself or have been recommended and have been testing them out to see how they compare. Do you really get what you pay for? Are they actually all the same?

There are so many things to take into consideration so I've tried to test take the same things into consideration for each pencil. Longevity, price, packaging, whether they are sharpen or twist up. In my opinion there is less to go wrong with a pencil that you sharpen - the product doesn't dry out and you don't get a fault with the mechanism. It is a bit of a ballache to have to sharpen. I feel I should just mention the difference in shimmery and sparkley here. For me 'shimmery' means a not matte but not noticable glittery finish, 'sparkley' means there are noticable bits of glitter of whatever size. I've included some swatches below so hopefully you'll be able to see what I mean. I've used these a lot but when testing and re-testing for this post I've worn for a couple of days on their own to see how they looked and lasted and a couple of days more as a base with a shadow over the top.

Face of the Day - 9th March 2017

I love wearing a bright lip in the spring and recently found one of my all time favourites, Dangerous Retro Matte from MAC. This will be too dry for some but I love the fact that this is a very wearable colour that lasts all day - I only reapplied it once and that was with eating a millionaire's shortbread, having a coffee and eating lunch!

If you haven't already then please subscribe to my channel and check out the blog www.londonmakeupblog.com.

I've linked to all the products used below (some are affiliate links so if you don't feel comfortable using them then do google the products yourself). Below that are links to any full reviews, from me, of products featured.

Red Lipstick

Wearable red lipstick
Lady Danger, Fire & Ice, Berry, Raven
Red lipstick is such a classic look that most make-up wearers have at least tried it even if they don't already own a few. In fact a lot of people I speak to have tried a red lip and felt that they couldn't pull it off. I can really understand this - a red lip is a bold statement, you need to feel confident to carry it off and even though it's a classic look it can be hard to wear. You need the right red which in this day and age is hard to find just for the sheer amount of choice.

What I personally love about a red lip is when it isn't a statement but just a chic everyday look - Monica in friends often wears a red lip but she's never a character I think of as being particularly make-up based. Get the rest of the make-up understated, team it with the right red and it can look incredible.

Christmas Gift Ideas - Make-up

Buying make-up for someone else is really difficult but it can be done with clever buying and maybe a bit of sneakiness. If you are too scared to buy actual make-up then I’ve put some brushes and other things below which are fantastic too.

My husband has a tendency to panic-buy things whilst out Christmas shopping, if you do this to then my advice is to go somewhere with a lot of counters (Selfridges, House of Fraser, Debenhams) find someone on a make-up counter who's make-up you like and ask them what they'd recommend. Remember you don't have to buy it though!

If you are brave enough to buy a foundation (remember you won’t be able to return it once it’s opened) then a bit of spying on what make-up they own already will help. Look at all the foundations they own and write down the brand, the name of the foundation and the colour (so for example MAC, Face and Body, N20). The brand and the name should be obvious, the colour which may be a number, will be on the bottom or the back. If in doubt take pictures on your phone. Any make-up counter worker worth their salt should be able to match you a colour if you take them these details.

I will add this to the list as soon as its available.I will also add things as and when I think of them.

  • EM-J Company – Everything you could possibly want if you are a professional make-up artist but also lovely personal brush wraps. I’m a huge Jiminy fan myself but there is really is something for everyone in these designs.
  •  Rimmel ScandalEyes Shadow Stick Eye shadow pencils are the latest trend and these are a great budget buy/stocking filler. Available in lots of lovely colours very long lasting considering the price. I have Bluffing which would suit all eye colours. .
  • CharlotteTilbury – there are more suggestions on my ‘What I’d Like’ recommendations but from what I've tried these are my top two. Filmstar Bronze & Glow – this suits all skin tones I’ve tried it on. The packaging is fabulous and would be a real treat for anyone who’s into make-up. Make-up Bag – this would be a lovely stocking alternative, stocking filler or present. I don’t have one of these by my god I want one.
  • Urban Decay Naked Palette – I love this palette (and all the Naked Palettes) but for me it’s the original here that is the best to give as a gift for sheer variety of colours so something for everyone.

  • Diorskin Star Fluid Foundation If you are brave enough then this is a beautiful foundation that would make a lovely present (festively named!). It’s quite a full coverage so only get this for someone if they are a wearer of foundation!
  • Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette - some really gorgeous colours for those who love a bit of drama wet and dry formulas, matte and shimmer this is incredibly versatile with one of my absolute favourite gold/bronze shimmers from any palette.

Pasture's New

Hurrah. Finally have spangly new job so will finally be doing something new for 8 hours a day! The new job is a little more country orientated so I will probably have to start discussing what make-up is best worn to a shoot lunch or what mascara is going to hold up after four hours sitting next to a river in the rain. However, before then I get to go and buy a new wardrobe, obviously, and having spent some time over recent months trying and failing to track down beautiful skirts today I managed to pick up three!

I have to say that I had rather lost my faith in Monsoon. You occasionally get a cracker but usually only after sifting through a lot of pricey rather mumsy wedding outfits. But now is the time to go. They have so many skirts that I literally had to make my choice and then blinker myself in the queue for the till. Still a few more bits to get - a nice summer coat for a start as the old leather jacket can look a little quaint over a sun dress and has made me feel not unlike Stevie Nicks going for job interviews. But where? any suggestions would be much appreciated. I also need a new handbag but I seem to start at Chanel and work my way up. Unless you can weave a great bag out of longing I think I need to set my sights a little lower.

I do, however, worry that they are not quite ready for the Miss B make-up. I think coming from a background in military history I may sometimes take the idea of 'war paint' a little too far but thats what you need when entering into the unknown. I am also a firm believer in going in as yourself - one of the benefits of this is that you don't come home a complete bitch and swearing like a sailor from being nice all day. Not that we Misses aren't heavenly all the time!

So, the purchase of skirts may seem like a good idea but with the early onset of summer my legs have look like they belong to Caspar and with the temperature soaring you really cannot rely on wearing tights. Now I don't know about you but for me finding the right fake tan is a harrowing and often embarrassing ordeal. However, as always Mumma B had the solution ready and waiting this morning.

The important thing about fake tan is making sure your legs are ready for it. If you apply to unprepared legs there is no way that it is going to look any good and not transfer on to all that touches you. So ladies do what you have to do for hair removal I shave (too chicken, too poor and too dark to wait for waxing) Miss F however, doesn't even need to possess a razor - each to their own. There are also lots of self tan preparations you can use. The Sanctuary a pre-tan exfoliator which although I haven't tried (yet) I'm told is really worth its teeny £4.25. Failing a specific pre-tan product you must moiturise, we all know that you should always moisturise after shaving but many neglect to moisturise right before you put on the fake tan. Just a nice light moisturiser is fine - I love Nivea it's not too pricy, it comes in big pots and really keep your skin smooth. But what fake tan?

When Johnsons holiday skin came out I ran to Boots faster than I think I've ever moved before. However, my skin is quite sensitive and I had to stop using it. My pasty legs were not only exactly the same colour as before just smelling a bit weird, but inbetween my fingers had gone orange. Not a success. Next was Dove's Summer Glow. This smells a little less like baby vomit but again apart from my fingers there was not a lot of change. Finally I went for Garnier's Summer Body. This smells soooo good but thats about it. I don't know maybe my skin is just too glaringly white for these to have an impact, maybe you are supposed to apply five times a day for five months. Either way I don't have the time, the patience or enough excuses for the suspicious stains on my hands.

So onto the real deal. I have never trusted anything other than instant tan. I have heard great things about gradual/progressive tans I just know that if I were to use one (and probably as karmic result of this blog) I would end up looking like Ross in that tan disaster friends episode we all know (yes you do). So, for me, instant tan is the way forward, although you can make it uneven and streaky you are not going to get oranger and oranger whilst at a party with no hope of stopping the process. Another reason why moisutriser is key for instant tan is because it helps prevent streaking and I find makes me more confident with the tan application - you've just applied the moisturiser so you apply the tan in the same way. St Tropez is good but this can go quite dark as can Piz Brun - these are serious self tans. But if they are applied properly these really are worth their quite expensive price tags.

There is not a lot I can tell you without having you all round for a good look at your skin tones and question about which kind of finish you prefer (minds out of gutter please). You really do have to try these on the back of your hand in a good light to really know which is the best for you. However, I will definately recommend Rimmel's Sun Shimmer Instant Tan. It comes with either a shimmer or a matte finish I decided to live dangerously and go for the shimmer. And as usual Mumma B was right - it's my favourite! Rather than making you look like you've basted yourself in goop and then rolled around on a kiddies craft table the shimmer actually really helps the post-Christmas pasty pins, giving them a bit of glow which lets face it, they need having been got out so early in the year!

So go forth Misses and get testing. Help is at hand but it's vital to get it right. No one wants to look like Jodie Marsh on a bad day (...or maybe even on a good day) and it's just too hot for tights! And remember no matter what you say about fake tan being 'cheap' or 'chavy' it's the safest way to make your legs stop looking like beacons! xx

Put Your Hands Together

Just a quick rant before I get started. I’d like to issue a warning. The pavement pervs have up-ed their game. On my way to the Doctor’s at 10.00 on a Wednesday morning with the sun shining and the birds singing I was walking behind two guys who I would guess to be Iranian. They looked over their shoulder a couple of times and I thought nothing of it. Then one turned around and ‘jokingly’ pretended to jack off onto me!!

I am not telling porkies. That is what happened. I was, for possibly one of the first times in my life, speechless. I stopped and stared with my mouth open. In hindsight this probably just added to the effect for both him and the onlookers. He finished his action cheerily and continued on his way laughing with his friend.
Is nothing sacred??

Right back to the more pressing business of the most un-romantic public act ever (not including the act above). I was shocked by Prince William’s pre-proposal announcement in the papers. Well I say shocked… it was more the wearied resignation of the un-shockable. I’ve spoken to girls on the subject of proposal’s and indeed do know people who have organised the date on which their other-half is to pop the question, but never have I met anyone who says that from an early age (or indeed any age) they have dreamt of their engagement being announced in the papers three years before it actually happened. Is romance dead? Is every secret pleasure of our relationships to be formalised and aired in public?

It seems that those in the public eye seem to get married to people they’ve seen a couple of times in a music video and eaten a few meals with. Marital problems get dragged through the papers and engagements are pre-planned. I suppose I can’t really comment as I am an avid reader of celebrity gossip. But to be honest there are some things I wish I didn’t know and I’d rather hear about Kate and William’s engagement the day after it had happened rather than over a thousand days before.

There is one bonus however. Kate gets to ensure she has the loveliest little mitts in town. I’d recommend a manicure to anyone. They are soothing and slightly decadent but also get something done which is quite frankly pretty dull. Princess Nails have never let me down and for £12 you get your nails shaped, your hands moisturised and rubbed and colour applied. However if, like me, your cash flow is but a dribble, spending any money on something which you can do yourself for free is not an option.

Cuticle Clippers
Firstly I get the creepy bit out of the way. I haven’t tried any cuticle removing creams but these are available at some chemists (definitely Boots and Superdrug). If you don’t want the cream then just soak your hands in warm water for a few minutes and then either using clippers or your preferred device .gently remove the cuticles. Sounds very obvious reading it but 90% of the women I’ve spoken to are a little screamish about their cuticles. Believe me its not as bad as you think.
Absolute Aromas Organic Sweet Almond Oil and salt is an amazing exfoliating and moisturising treatment. It is exactly how it sounds. Just pour the almond oil into your palm and add some salt (with big crystals) and get rubbing. Then rinse. I do this after I remove my nail varnish – I usually use nail varnish remover on my nails even when I haven’t worn nail varnish for a while. It gets off any leftovers and will remove anything else not noticeable to the human eye. I recommend Quickies Nail Varnish Remover Pads with Vitamin B5. You can do all your nails with one pad (unless you are being a red-nailed vixen – that stuff gets everywhere you need to bathe in nail varnish remover) and they don’t dry out your nails so much. All nail varnish remover is stringent though so always wash your hands and moisturise after.

All-in-one nail buffers and polishers are great and last for years. I keep one in my handbag just in case I have time to buff-on-the-go. You can get them in pretty much any big chemist now, definitely Boots and Superdrug for about £2. I also carry around a nail file and have some strategically placed around the house and my office (there is one stashed in the loos). These you can also pick up anywhere. Claire’s Accessories and Boots do fun ones for around £1. Never underestimate the power of the nail file. I hardly ever cut my nails anymore it’s much easier just to re-shape every now and again. To clip or to scissor is a personal preference. I clip Mr J amongst others cut. I’m assuming that this is because I’m constantly trying to keep my nails at a decent length rather than practically short so I need less precision.

I have to admit that 50% of the time when buying nail varnishes I don’t like the colour when I get home. It never looks the same as it does in the bottle and it takes a trained eye to know what it will actually come out like. You are pretty safe with reds but pink is danger territory. There is only one person who I trust to pick out my nail varnish, the Mumma B, and 2 out of my top 3 colours come from her choosing. She can match colour to skin tone and see what the colour will look like on (I can hear her denying all knowledge of this ability but I hope that secretly she knows it’s true). She also taught me to always put a base coat on, an often overlooked trick of vital importance, this protects the nail and stops it from turning yellow. It is also essential to put on a top coat as this will take most of the bumps without chipping the colour. But what goes in-between? There are so many colours out there and everyone has different nail and skin tone and many different preferences in polish colour but I’ve picked my top three which I think would suit most people:
  1. Courtesy of Santa last year (another Mumma B choice) Maybelline New York Express Finish Shock Control its impossible to tell from my bottle what the colour is but Pearly Pink looks a slightly lighter version.
  2. Rimmel Lycra Wear in 325 Hot Gossip is a great deep red. It has a little sparkle in it so it’s not too much of a flat colour. So far this is the closest I’ve got to the perfect red nail varnish. This is really hardwearing especially after two coats.
  3. My favourite another Mumma B purchase is Rimmel’s Lycra Wear in 307 Grape Sorbet. She bought me this nail varnish when I said I was doubtful of the colour. We got home and it’s been on my toe nails ever since.
Hope this helps keep those hands looking beautiful and rings slipping onto fingers. And for those of you who’ve already got your diamonds – don’t let them down! xx

The Natural Look

Now I know it has all been a bit quiet on the Miss B front of late. Not only have I been suffering from a rather embarrassing illness but there has not been a lot to report on the terrifying world of celebrities. Britney has been in, out and back into rehab, Paris has cried at her birthday party, Liz Hurley got married and Charlotte Church is pregnant. But all in a very calm way. I guess that once you’ve seen a shaven headed Britney attacking a car with an umbrella dressed like an extra from Dodgeball everything else is bound to seem a bit tame.

I have also been applying for jobs and preparing for interviews which have forced me, against my will, to think slightly less about products and celebrities and more on my own charm offensive. The rest of my brain has been stuck on a new handbag and some grey suede stilettos. If anyone has any suggestions on where to get either I would be grateful. Not that I can afford to go and buy them but I am allowed to gaze in wonder and longing through shop windows.
So with all this too-ing and fro-ing, shop avoidance, self improvement and lack of funds what have I been up to beauty wise? Well I’ve been experimenting with the Natural Look! I’ve never been able to do it myself. I one of those more is more girls when it comes to make-up. Not because I am unaware that I look like I’m wearing a lot of make-up but because I like the look of myself all done up. I should say that as this is an anonymous website and therefore there are no pictures of me I do not look like Dame Barbara Cartland I promise. But, as I’ve said before, I don’t stint on the eyeliner and to be honest I rarely have the inclination to wear less.
That was until Miss M started seeing a guy from work, Mr N. I was living vicariously through their office flirting and illicit drinks. After a couple of months it was clear that Mr N was going to around for a while (they booked a holiday to Paris… Where’s my holiday??) Miss M decided the time had come. She could no longer go to bed war painted to the gunnels with a tube of mascara clutched at the ready. It was time to see if Mr N would stand the ground that lesser men had feared to tread. The morning after the night before... with no make-up.
Miss M takes after me in the will-not-leave-the-house-without-make-up stakes but there comes a time when every Mr has to see his Miss without the slap. Quite often, as was the case for me and the Mumma B (who claims to not have removed her mascara for the first year of marriage) the Mr in question does not notice this daring act of intimacy. But just in case we have an out. The Natural Look. Or the no make-up make-up as I like to call it (I was encouraged further when Miss G arrived at work completely sans make-up looking, and I am not kidding, absolutely stunning).
So what does Miss M rely on in times of no-make-up need? A touch of foundation on theMax Factor Masterpiece Mascara cheeks, Vaseline Petroleum Jelly No. 3 - 225g, mascara and blusher. Miss S smugly replied informed me ‘I always go for the natural look’. And she does. She always looks great and doesn’t take 3 hours to get ready (except when prising a wine glass from her hand!). She goes for Clinique’s Cream Shaper eyeliner in Brown Sugar, black mascara and some uncoloured lip balm. All three of us love Maxfactor's Materpiece mascara although, typical me, i've now opted for the new extra volume version. With this advice in mind I’ve been having an experBenefit Lemon Aidiment and I think I’ve come up with my ideal no make up make up.
  • Lemon Aid (of course) on the eyelids. You can actually just use this if you are going for the ultra natural look.
  • I always use foundation, especially at this time of year. I find that my skin does not look its best during the winter months if left to its own devices. I'm still hooked on Rimmel's Cool Matte 16hr Mousse.
  • Clinique Quickliner in Roast Coffee
  • Clinique’s Quickliner in Roast Coffee all around the eyes (lightly on the lower lids) and smudged about a bit. I still use quite a lot of definition on the corners of my eyes but as I’ve said before… I like looking like I have make-up on – I’m not one of the natural human wonders. But subtley and smudgily done this is a great 'natural' liner.
  • Vaseline Petroleum Jelly No. 3 - 225g. This is great for lips and eyes. If you use a touch on your eyelids then your eyeliner smudges up really well and it adds a touch of ‘natural’ shine.
  • A light dusting of Clinique’s Powder Blush in Innocent Peach.
  • Maxfactor’s Masterpiece Mascara
So go forth and be natural. Lets face it - it doesn't seem like the Mr's are going to notice it anyway xx

Feminine Fallbacks

Nicole Richie has been caught 'driving under the influence'. Influence of what you may ask. Well she's admitted cannabis and Vicodin but can that really explain driving the wrong way up a 'freeway'? I think not. I feel a bit bad as she really seems to have been getting her life back on track recently. Everywhere I turn there seems to be another picture of her eating - that can't be easy for someone who's weight is probably the most discussed since Karen Carpenter's. No wonder she had an eating disorder. Wouldn't you if every time you put fork to mouth someone popped up from behind a bush with a camera.

Still, I'm pretty militant in my non-acceptance of DUI so I can't say I'm sorry she got caught. Reports say that she was 'very cooperative and very humble' so i don't think she needs any further chastisement. However, according to Californian State Law second offenders for DUI (Nicole's first run in was in 2002 after 'a shot of vodka') should spend a minimum of 5 days in jail. So in honour of Nicole and her hopefully not-to-wobbly road to recovery, Little Miss B would like to dedicate today's post to one asset that every woman has. The eyelashes. And lets hope Nicole uses these babies to ensure that she stays out the slammer and this 'incident' doesn't derail her road to recovery.
    Benfit Bad Gal Lash
  • First Up its Bad Gal Lash by Benefit. This has to be one of my all time favourites. With 'the biggest brush in the business' it gives you probably the closest to false eyelashes you can get. I used to wear it everyday but I now keep it back for nights out when I want the lashes to be at their most noticable.
  • But size isn't everything. As much as I love Bad Gal the mascara that is an almost permanent fixture on my lashes is Masterpiece Max by Max Factor. It looks a bit scary on the adverts but this is truly a wonder. One of the first mascaras to come out with the new finer brushes, of all the ones I've tried they seem to have got the consistency just right for the brush size. This one is a real must. Worth every every penny.
  • Another fine brush wonder is Magnif'eyes by Rimmel. This really does accentuate every lash but unlike Masterpiece I find this slightly (and ever so slightly)Rimmel Magnif'eyes mascara too thick. If you don't have an eyelash comb this one may cause clumping problems. But only minor ones.
  • Another surprise was Bourjois Pump Up the Volume waterproof mascara. When I first bought this I relegated it to the not-much-used make up bag at my boyfriends house because I found it so clumpy. However, after two months of being open I used it again and it was amazing.
  • As for the white-then-black mascaras Bourgeois Coup-de-Theatre is really good but I like to use Bad Gal Lash on top of the white. My all time favourite is Origins Underwear for Lashes. You can really layer this up and then top it off with The Full Story Mascara (also by Origins).
I have to say there were a couple I was really disappointed by. In face Lash Architect by L'Oreal was probably the most disappointing piece of make-up I've ever bought and as one of the most expensive mascaras on the market. I expected a whole lot more. It clumped beyond repair and after two months of being open became a sticky unbearable mess. I threw it out. I have actually only met one person who thought this was any good but am very willing to be told different. Rimmel's Volume Flash Mascara was also a huge lash clumper. I'm not a fan.

If I had to choose then its a really tough call between Masterpiece and Bad Gal Lash. They are both great by it would probably have to be Masterpiece. Anytime anywhere this is a great mascara which will never let you down.

I would love to hear of anyone who is a devotee of the false eyelashes or who has any suggestions for a mascara (or anything!) they can't live without.
