How to do your own bridal make-up - base

One of the lovely ladies in my FB group is planning on doing her own make-up for her wedding next year so I said I would do a series of videos on bridal make-up and how to apply it for her. I thought I would start with skin as for me this is the most important thing to get right on your wedding day and it may take a bit of practise.

I've listed a lot of products below and have put a * next to products I've used in the video - everything else is just an alternative suggestion that I would substitute in if needed.

The key to great bridal base make-up is building up thin layers of product rather than fewer thicker ones. This will keep everything blended and fresh and make it last longer and move less.

I don't make it clear at the end but if you apply your make-up a while before your wedding and want to freshen it up then sprtizing it with a setting spray is a great idea. Any questions please feel free to ask and, if you haven't already, subscribe to my channel.

Instagram Q&A 1 - Part 1

Wow this is much harder than I thought it would be. Editing it down was difficult and it made me realise that the problem with videos is - you miss things. Every time I watched it through to edit it I could see things I'd meant to mention and then didn't and that is, I guess, a good thing, because otherwise the video would be hours long but means I feel that my answers are, in some cases, lacking a bit. But it's my first Q&A and in the spirit of being easy on myself this year I'm going to say you can't get it perfect first time out! Any additional info I've listed below with the products mentioned.

Part 1 is questions 1-6 and part 2 will be 7-14

Thank you so much for everyone who sent in questions. I really enjoyed doing this. Please go to the video in YouTube or to the comments below to carry on the conversation.

1. Gemma (@the_organised_mum)
Mascara (Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara)

2. Becca Leggate

3. PickleTricky

4. Gina

NYX Wonderstick
Blend, Blend, Blend!

5. Gina
Louise Young Powder Blushers (I particularly love Mae, Dolly, Maudie and Coop)
Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush (Rose Glow and Cherub)
Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush Samples

6. Helen
Spend on skin products - tinted moisturiser, foundation or skincare - a good tinted moisturiser with an SPF is great if you don't need/want too much coverage.
Save on mascaras unless you only wear mascara in which case you can spend a bit more but remember they are mostly the same formula in different packaging.
Don't spend too much on eye shadows - I like Bourjois Smoky Stories and Louise Young Eye Trios
Aim for mid-price and you should get good quality.
Always happy to advise!

Beauty Christmas Gift Ideas

This could be pretty endless so I've tried to keep it concise. Some of these I've tried, some I haven't, but all of them are things I would willingly give and gladly receive.

Bath Bombs - I don't know why but they always feel like a treat to me. And come on, they are fun.

Charlotte TIlbury Brush SetBecca Glow on the Go - this on-trend rose gold kit should suit most skin tones. And it's another one that's pretty reasonably priced.

Bobbi Brown - have a lot to offer this Christmas. For those on a bigger budget the Sparkle All Night Eyes and Lips Kit is very wearable and transportable but my personal favourite is the Caviar and Rubies Eye Set.

Charlotte Tilbury - yes her products are (mostly) worth the hype. I'd chose the Bitch Perfect Lip Set (every time I wear this lipstick I get asked what it is, without fail),  I've always secretly wanted this make-up bag, I'm pushing the boundaries on whether you can actually have too many make-up brushes I love this mini kit for when I eventually travel again.

Daniel Sandler - any of the watercolour blushers would be absolutely lovely but the Customisable Colour for Cheeks is pretty special.

Laura Mercier Art of Exotic Colour CollectionLaura Mercier - another gorgeous brush set this year.  The Art of Exotic Colour collection looks love too.

Lipstick Queen Transformer Trio - these are fun and really not unreasonably priced.

Lord & Berry - much underrated in my opinion. I use and love their kajal and their lipsticks and would happily receive their stylographic linerlipstick pencils (in fire, scarlett or blush), or Twistick (in On Stage). And at the moment they are offering a free gift (that I really want) when you purchase two products or more.

Louise Young - another brand from which I would happily recommend anything and her brushes would make gorgeous stocking fillers or goodie bag stuffers.

Marc Jacobs On the Prowl Set - the Marc Jacobs eye shadows have been one of the most talked about releases of this year and the one included in this set looks incredibly wearable. The Wild One eye shadow palette is pretty incredible looking too.
Lipstick Queen Transformer Trio
Nudestix - This Matte Nude Lip and Cheek Stain is lovely, even if I'm a little over matte at the moment.

NYX - may not be high end but one of their Jumbo Eye Pencils would be a welcome addition to any stocking or goodie bag. Cashmere, Iced Mocha, French Fries and Yoghurt are all great colours.

Origins - I'm a huge Origins fan and this Holiday Gift Set looks absolutely wonderful. The Easy Slider Pre-Shave Oil would be great for the man in your life

Philip Kinglsey - the elasticiser is one of the few products I genuinely think makes a difference.

Pixi Best of Bright - yes I love the Glow Tonic but there's something more festive about this little kit and they are the perfect size for those who travel.

Don't forget to go and see my non-beauty gift ideas, and my suggestions for what to get kids aged 0-10. Still to come are presents for teens and my book suggestions.

Urban Decay Naked Heat Look 1

Now I feel I should say that I really love using this palette with other products - it goes really well with the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani palette but when I review a product I think of those people who don't necessarily want a ton of palettes. What I want is to be able to do a lot of looks from barely there to really dramatic for me this palette is quite full-on even when you are trying not to be. I feel for the consumer at this price point (£39.50) I'd want a little bit more versatility.

That being said when I do wear it with other products - quite often a browner cream shadow used as a primer works well - I get lots of compliments! All products listed below as are links to any product reviews featured on this blog.

Summer Glowy Skin Day to Night video

Though I don't deliberately go for a 'look' most of the time I am aware that pregnancy often makes me look tired and spotty and so when I know I am seeing people or when I am not feeling my best I do tend to try and make my skin look as glowing as possible. To hide the fact that it's actually quite dull and lumpy at the moment.

Every time I do this make-up I get told how amazing I look and that's enough for me. I also wear it all day and just add a bit more definition and highlight if I'm going out or seeing people in the evening. For this to be as natural as possible I try to use most cream/liquid products so everything can be seamlessly blended (I then whack powders on in the evening!)

The first part of this make-up is what I do in the morning. I love the Estee Lauder EE cream as it has an SPF 30 (I'm on the hunt for a great powder SPF to top up with during the day). The second part is what I add in the evening before/during/after kids bathtime. It may look that I'm adding extra highlight or blusher on top of stuff that's already there but that's just for the purposes of this video. Imagine that 10 hours have passed...

If you haven't already then please subscribe to my channel, do leave me a comment (you'll make a pregnant woman very happy... unless it's a mean one). All products are listed below (some may be affiliate links) as are links to any reviews or videos mentioned.

Everyday Guide to Primers

Primers is one of those subjects that once you get started it's very hard to know when to stop - you can now get photography fluids and other post-moisturiser, pre-foundation fluids that I didn't include here. Nor did I include lash primers. I've gone for basic primers as they were originally - to prep the skin and increase the longevity of your make-up.

For a lot of people you don't need a primer but I often get asked about whether people should use them and if so which ones. Primers are great because you can use them for just where you need them, they don't necessarily need to go all over your face. If I am prepping a brides skin I will often use primer over the majority of the face, then a mattifying primer on the t-zone and an illuminating one on the tops of the cheek bones.

I only use them on myself if I am going to a wedding or going out, out. Otherwise I find my foundations last pretty well all day anyway. I do however, always use them when I am working on brides or on someone with an oily skin.

I do use an eye primer every day as I find it really helps my eye make-up stay in place and I am often testing eye products so I'll use primer on one lid and not on the other to see how it affects the shadow/liner I'm trying.

All the products I've mentioned are listed below. Let me know what primers you love or hate and don't forget to subscribe to my channel.

Face of the Day 27th April 2017

The light's a bit off in this video - sorry about that it's the crazy English spring weather and the fact that I have to set up and film in the brief moments when I am child-free and the builders are not drilling right, next, to, my, head.

I've been loving eye shadow sticks at the moment (more on that to follow) but one that I get almost scared of using is the Colour Chameleon from Charlotte Tilbury because in my head, Bronze Garnet is incredibly orange. It's not. Every time I use it I'm reminded of what a great product this is and how annoying Tilbury is with her cleverness.

Everyday Guide to Brows

This is the first in my new series of Everyday Guides where I tell you the absolute basics of what you need to do for certain aspects of make-up. If you have something you'd like to see then let me know.

One of the questions I get asked most often is about brows and how to just 'fill them in a bit' or 'make them less crap'. Brows are still huge in the world of make-up but a lot of my clients want to know how to make the best of theirs, on a daily basis without looking like they've done anything to them at all.

I wanted this to be a short video but it's incredibly hard to cover everything - you always feel like there will be someone somewhere saying 'she didn't even mention... '. I can't mention everything. This is not a video on how to fill in your brows if they are really sparse. As far as I'm concerned Sam from Pixiwoo has covered that in the video I've linked to below. It's also not a tutorial on how to get really full, drawn-in brows that are so fashionable on Instagram now. That can seriously backfire when done in real life and is, I believe, the main reason I have so many women coming to me asking for brow advice. I am by no means queen of brows, I rarely do anything to mine. This is just the basics - what you can use, my favourite products and how to do it.

All products are listed below and products with a * that I haven't used but have had recommended to me from other make-up artists are listed under that. There are so many brands that do brow products now that again I may not mention ones that you use and love. Do feel free to mention them in the comments.  If anything is not clear then do feel free to leave me a comment either on here or on YouTube or send me an email.

Face of the Day - 7th April 2017

It's rare for me to do the same make-up every day. However, for the past couple of weeks with illness, pregnancy, building works and various other things I kept reaching for the Louise Young eye trios as they are so quick to use and work so beautifully. So that's the main feature of this face of the day.

I had moisturised with my Clarins SPF50 Anti-Wrinkle cream beforehand - which I suspect may not be helping with my skin at the moment. However it works well under make-up if you give it time to settle in and sometimes I like a high SPF on my face. I also don't do anything to my brows in this because I filmed a brow video straight after which will be up in the next couple of weeks as part of a new series.

Face of the Day - 11th March 2017

This is a really simple face of the day. I've tried to use affordable products and where I haven't I hopefully explain why not and offer a High St alternative. As always I've listed everything below and if I've mentioned other products I've listed them too.

I'm not entirely happy with lip here - it is very pale but the other Burt's Bees balm I had to hand (Hibiscus) was too dark - the one I was after has disappeared!

I should mention that when I say High St quite often I mean affordable. So for me the Lola eye base is an ok price considering how long it lasts but I'm not sure you'd necessarily call M&S High St.

Let me know you affordable/High St foundation favourites and if you haven't already then subscribe to my channel and come and say hi on social media where I'm @corinnaharrod.

Face of the Day - 9th March 2017

I love wearing a bright lip in the spring and recently found one of my all time favourites, Dangerous Retro Matte from MAC. This will be too dry for some but I love the fact that this is a very wearable colour that lasts all day - I only reapplied it once and that was with eating a millionaire's shortbread, having a coffee and eating lunch!

Subtle Blue Liner Video

At the end of 2015 Urban Decay released the Gwen Stefani palette which I loved from the get go but has been one of the most requested how-to videos I've had. A lot of you have bought this but find you are using the same colours over and over so I've come up with a few looks using some of the more unusual colours in the palette.

How to get perfect bridal skin even in hot weather - Friday Video

I recently had the pleasure of doing a wedding in Greece. It was so much fun to do but at 38C it was hot, even for Greece in July. I needed to pack a basic kit that would have all eventualities covered, would suit the bride and that would travel well. Nothing to heavy, nothing that would leak and most importantly products that if they melted could still be useable. No double-faced palettes this time.

Long-lasting make-up is not only down to which products you use but how you apply them. I know a lot of people want to apply their own make-up when they get married so I thought it would be useful to show how I ensured Maria had perfect make-up all day (and night!) even when it was pretty hot.

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder

I love this powder. It's on the re-buy list so I was a little surprised when I thought I'd use the review as a #throwbackthursday post on Instagram and Twitter and discovered that I have never reviewed it! Since first using the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder 7 years ago it is one of my go-to products, my prized make-up possessions, something that I can't bear to run-out without a back-up to hand.

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder When I first bought this it was to set the secret camouflage concealer that I had also got at the same time but which I never really loved. I always found it a bit cakey for me though I know many a devotee of it. But this, this I loved from the get-go and every similar product I've tried has just not really matched it. If you are someone who likes to set their under-eye corrector and concealer then this product could be for you.

It brightens without the use of shimmer so is fantastic for those of us who still show a bit of dark under the eyes even with a concealer. And it doesn't fall into, and therefore accentuate any creases which is the main problem I've found with every other under-eye setting powder I've tried.

And it seems to work on all skin types even though it's a white, light reflecting pigment there is no ashiness, if correctly applied... I've seen some internet disasters whilst researching this. What is make-up coming too? When will this female drag look go out of fashion and eyebrows go back to looking like brows not Sharpied on slugs? Rant, rant...
