The Best Black Eyeliner Pencils

I thought I should keep this short and sweet. In case you haven't noticed I'm a bit of a black liner aficionado and there are three pencils that I really love. One which I have bought over and over and over and two which are fairly new to me but I will be re-buying when I need to, no questions asked. I get asked about black pencil liners a lot so here they are.

Three favourite black liner pencils yellow background

1. MAC Eye Kohl in Smoulder

You can see from the size of it that it's my ride or die. The one I reach for most mornings whether it's to do a liner or just my waterline. It goes on easily, smudges nicely and lasts a long time. This is not an ink, gel or waterproof liner, it will wear off and it will move which is partly why I like it. But it wears off and moves well. 90s make-up fans take note. £15

2. L'Oreal Infallible Gel Eyeliner Crayon

A panic purchase in the Boots at Euston station causing me to miss my train (which cost me £37 I don't have) but meant I arrived in Liverpool suitably lined. It's hard to find a waterproof liner that will go on the waterline but this does and it stays there. Is now a handbag staple. £4.99

3. Lord & Berry Kajal Stick

It's big, it's fat, it's slightly tricky to use but it glides on easily and gives a fairly satisfying panda effect. Claudia Winkleman uses it. A little goes a long way. I whack this over the top of a pen liner to give some oomff and rely on the pen to have the longevity. Again this will move and progress around the place during the day but as you know, I'm ok with that. You can read my full review of it here. £14

20 Under £20 - My Best Cheap Beauty Buys

I started this off to test myself. It started off easily and then got harder. I've kept it in the order in which these came to me. Which means sometimes you'll be able to see my train of thought. I tried to keep it varied. I could probably name twenty great black liners for under £20 but I've limited myself - you all know I love MAC Smoulder so I've tried where necessary to go for something less obvious. For certain others, like the product that is first on the list, there is no question that it deserves it's place here. It's unrivalled. I've been recommending it for a decade or so.

20 Products for £20

What are your favourites? Have I missed anything you think deserves a place? Let me know down in the comments.

School Run Make-up Essentials

Essential school run make-upOne thing I always want to be on all my platforms (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter - come say Hi) is real. Yes I could do Instamakeup and pout and paint my entire house in Farrow & Ball Drainpipe, there's nothing wrong with that and I'd probably have a hell of a lot more followers. But that's just not me. My house is not Instagramable, it has old features, vom-proof carpet and half-painted rooms (til we fix the plumbing) and though I do sometimes like to trowel it on, my make-up is mostly quick, easy and as flattering as possible with a minimum amount of products.

Since Ned started school my complete inability to remove myself from my bed before 8am (I will grab whichever kid is screaming and retreat back under the duvet) has made me really focus in on what's important to get done in the 50 minutes I have to get everyone up and dressed and out the door*. Do I feel comfortable facing the school mums with no make-up on? No, I'd rather go in my pyjama's and, although I don't go in my pyjama's I do just shove on what I feel like wearing, what's close to hand, and what will fair well lying on the floor desperately re-building the bloody Lego Scooby Doo Mystery Machine while Jim shouts 'build it BUILD IT' or taking Jack to Monkey Music. Mostly this involves Hush joggers and a band t-shirt and I'm ok with that. If you are prone to The Misery you have to know when to give yourself a break and I'm ok with being the least fashionable person at drop-off - as long as I have some make-up on.

Lord & Berry Kajal

If you don't like your eye make-up to budge then you should probably stop reading. This isn't for you. If you are like me and don't mind everything grunging up again then this could be something you'll love. I read about this a couple of years ago and have been meaning to try it for ages (as I consider myself a bit of a black eyeliner aficionado) - it is loved by almost-a-national-treasure Claudia Winkleman. And though I love her, she's not always the tidiest in the make-up department. I don't think she cares about that.

So, in case you haven't already guessed it. This moves. It glides on beautifully and will also glide around beautifully given half a chance. Eye rubbers step away from the kajal. This is great with some eyeshadow pressed over the top to set it a bit or if you like to smudge up and smoke out your eyeliner. If you wear it on the waterline it will go on incredibly easily, but you will need to re-apply it throughout the day.

Lord & Berry Black Gold Stardust Loose Eyeshadow

Lord & Berry Black Gold Stardust loose powderEvery time I try a new Lord & Berry product I am struck by two things. 1) How great the products are from pigmentation to packaging 2) how bizarrely difficult they are to get hold of and how unknown they are in the UK.

My latest find from them is actually thanks to Santa as it appeared unexpectedly in my stocking. The Black Gold Stardust Loose Eyeshadow originally looked like something you would use to create a black eye but it is incredibly versatile and buildable and is in fact beautiful as a wash over the lid with a strong liner. Which is exactly how I wore it on New Year's Eve - I'll use it in a video soon enough. As with all loose shadows and pigments though I'd apply this before your foundation/base so you can clean up any drop down (especially when using darker colours!).

Lord & Berry Black Gold Stardust Loose Eyeshadow Powder swatch
Terrible swatch - very hard to see the beautiful gold flecks
One of the reasons I don't have more of their products (apart from the aforementioned unavailability) is that I always assume they are going to be really expensive but actually they are very reasonable. Their (gorgeous) Vogue Matte lipstick is only £13 and this Stardust Loose Eyeshadow £9.50 available from BeautyExpert and Asos I really recommend trying out some of their products - I'd love to know what you think.
