The first Empties video of 2019 and indeed the first video of 2019. I haven't done a video or a blog for quite a while. I will be trying to up my game a little but other work has taken over and if I was to see my husband at all something had to give a little.

Monday's Make-up Muse - Pink

Still from the 'True Love' video
As with Gwen Stefani, Pink's make-up I have loved since she first appeared on my radar in 2000. She has one of those faces that takes make-up well and a smokey eye looks fantastic on her. Her make-up style is similar to mine - more dramatic eyes with a nude lip so she's one person who a lot of the time I'll see her make-up for something and try and recreate it on myself. If you are on Instagram then follow Kathy Jeung (@kathyjeung) who often does Pink's make-up - her work is beautiful.

Whether she is wearing a smudgy, grungy liner with a slight smoke at the outer corner or being completely out there and creative as in the video for 'Try', Pink is not afraid to try out new things with make-up and can carry anything off - partly down to having awesome hair. It's really hard to find good make-up photos of her because quite often it's too far away (red carpet pics are often useless for seeing actual make-up) or she's pulling a face. The best place to see her make-up in action is in her videos which I suggest you go and do and get inspired.

Pink Make-up Must Haves

Eyes - always cat shaped and usually smoked at the edges. For high street then the Sleek Make-up I-Divine Palette in Storm is good though you may need to use a primer underneath I really like Nudestix Magnetic Eye Pencil in Angel with Liz Earle Signature Eye Colour in Bronze. I particularly like it lighter on the inner corners with bronzes and golds on the outer edge. My liner of choice at the moment is the Make Up For Ever Ink Liner or Inglot Gel Liner in 77. If you'd rather use a pencil then Smoulder from MAC is always a winner. For the mascara you will want something as black as possible Bobbi Brown's Smokey Eye Mascara would be great here or Benefit's Roller Lash.

Skin - Dewy and sculpted with minimal blush. MAC Face and Body would be a great foundation to go for or Dior Star Fluid and my favourite cream for sculpting is Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel or the House of Glam Dolls Glam Base Wheel. For concealer I really like Collection Lasting Perfection and Sleek Make-up Luminous Powder is good for keeping a bit of glow.

Lips - Usually nude though occasionally red. Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk or Pink Venus or MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl for the nudes and Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Crazy in Love is my go-to favourite for red tones. For nude lipsticks, well it's very personal, I like Chanel Rouge Coco in Teheran and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Bitch Perfect.

Colour Match - Green Eyes

Something I get asked about a lot and which I always factor into my bridal work is choosing eyeshadows that are going to bring out eye colours. Once you know what's going to really enhance your eyes then you can go straight for those shades and choosing quads and palettes becomes much less time consuming.

I thought I'd start off with green eyes as, well my eyes are green and though I don't colour match them with my eye shadow every day when I do a lot of people suddenly comment on them. Usually they just look kind of sludgey.

You can choose shades to enhance your eyes - these will reflect your own natural eye colour. So, green shadow for green eyes. Alternatively you can choose to intensify you eye colour - to do this, you need to select shades from the opposite side of the colour wheel and the contrast will make your eyes 'pop'. (Agghhhh I hate that expression.) But, you also need to take into account your skin tone. I avoid purples because of my dark circles, for instance, although a thin line of purple liner would do the trick nicely for most green eyes. Personally I love black liner and mascara, and they will bring out the green in your eyes nicely. Brown's are the way to go if you want something a bit more subtle or for the daytime.

So to enhance your eyes choose a similar shade of green. Golds look beautiful too with green eyes. Or to make them really intense go for purples, copper, browns and taupes. A good slightly metallic beige or tan will really bring out the green during the day so if you want to tone it down for the office those are the ones to try. By choosing an eye quad or palette that has a mix of colours in it you are guaranteed to make the most of your green eyes whatever mood you are in or whatever event you are doing your make-up for and some brands are even starting to note which product will work with which eye colour (thanks Charlotte Tilbury!)

Some of my favourite products for green eyes...

green eye no makeup
Green eye with satin taupe makeup Sorry for terrible photo's but thought it would be good to show the difference it can make... on the left is my unmade up eye. Below is with a bit of the Bronzed Garnet from Charlotte Tilbury and Satin Taupe from MAC done very quickly as late for nursery. Standing in the same position light-wise..

Serums

I am a make-up artist but I am a huge, huge believer in, and fan of, skincare. If you ensure that your skin is the best it possibly can be the better your make-up will look and the less you will need (if you want less...) but for many people it seems a cheaper, quicker fix to neglect skincare and slap on more make-up.

I can completely understand why this is. You get immediate results from make-up. Spend £30 on a foundation you've tested on the back of your hand in the shop and see it working as soon as you use it. Spend £30 on a serum and, well who knows if it's ever going to work at all? But that's why I write this blog. I'm here to help.

Since I started concentrating on my skincare my skin looks and feels so much better but it takes a while to work out what your skin needs and when. If you have problem skin it's really worth going to a skincare specialist and seeing what they recommend and what's on offer - some brands you can only get from a salon so it is worth doing some research if you think you need something tougher. There are also some great brands available at more affordable prices on the high street so you don't always need to spend ridiculous amounts to get the best results though I have yet to find a high street serum to beat the more high-end ones I've tried.

If I can convince one of my friends to cleanse, tone and moisturise I'm very unlikely to be able to get them to add a serum into the mix but using a serum has been a big game changer for me. So I've done a little bit of research.

What is a serum and why use one?
Serums have high concentrations of certain active ingredients (hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C or glycolic acid for example) to give intensive focus on one or two things like anti-aging, dry skin etc. Moisturisers are formulated to be absorbed into the very top layer of the skin but also add a barrier against the elements and whereas serums have smaller molecules to be easily absorbed deeply into the skin. Serums are more expensive than moisturisers because they are more concentrated but you need less product and you don't have to use it every day if you can't afford to.

Why shouldn't you use a serum?
People with eczema or rosacea - conditions that weaken the skin barrier - may want to avoid serums as they can cause irritation. There are some that say they are fine for use with eczema and other skin conditions but I would definitely find a way to try them out before you buy.

When to use a serum?
Apply after cleansing and toning before your moisturiser (after your eye cream if you use it). But your skin will only absorb what it needs so don't use so much, a pea-size amount is usually enough. If you have sensitive skin then it's best to wait ten minutes after cleansing to apply the serum. As with all skincare take it down your neck and decollete.

Results
You can see some serums working pretty much immediately but it's best to use them consistently to see the best results.

Which serum to use?
Oily skins - will want a water-based serum and you may want to use it instead of a moisturiser so you are getting an intensive treatment without over-loading the skin.
Dry skin - can use water- or oil-based serums. Retinol can help accelerate cellular renewal and brighten the skin and make it appear more luminous but can irritate if used too much. Essential oils and fatty acids can help the skin repair itself overnight and make sure it's barrier function is working. If you have dry skin then you should use a serum and a moisturiser.
Anti-wrinkle - you need to choose an anti-oxident rich serum (Vitamin C for example) as these work well at preventing oxidative strain from pollution and UV which also makes them ideal for use in the morning. Peptides will help boost collagen and elastin production and restore firmness to the skin.

A few serums that you may want to look into trying out...

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster - I've done a full review of this which you can read here. I love this and think it suits all skin types. It's water based so good for oily skins but is really rich in vitamin C so fantastic for dry or more mature skins. If you are not sure which one to go for this is the one I'd recommend £47.
Sunday Riley Juno - I haven't tried this but I am desperate to, I've heard nothing but good things about it. Rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Vitamin C so this suits dry and mature skins. It's one of the most expensive at £98.
Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate - best for use overnight and actually great for normal to oily skins (my sister loves this one and she has combination skin) though if you have an oily skin you may want to skip moisturising afterwards. Full of plant oils this award winning serum is available in 3 different sizes, the smallest being 2ml (£6) so you can try this before you have to buy the full size of it.£6-£40.50
Elizabeth Arden Advanced Night Repair Sychronized Recovery Complex II - yet another one I haven't-yet-but-want-to-try. For all skin types, a reformulation of an original product that a lot of people swore by, this version has stepped it up a notch. To be used before moisturising at night (obviously) this serum is another multi-award winner. £49
Sisley - I haven't tried any of these serums but I trust Sisley when it comes to skincare and have heard great things about their Black Rose products so worth having a look if you are already a fan or wanting to try something out from their range. From an eye-watering £138

Some of my favourite things from 2013

Thank you so much to all those who took part in my huge Christmas Giveaway. I have to say I was slightly daunted by giving something away for 24 days in a row but it actually went really well and I was really pleased I did it so thank you everyone who entered. Due to the giveaway and Christmas and powercuts I failed to film any videos over Christmas and was about to fail to do so again due to poor-hair-maintenance related vanity and my forgetfulness (me in London, camera tripod in Hampshire) but I thought 'that is no way to start 2014' so here it is in all it's bad hair and rambley glory.

If you don't already do so I would love it if you'd subscribe to my channel and leave me a comment either on what you loved in 2013 or letting me know what videos you'd like me to do in the future. I hope that you are all having a wonderful start to your year - I know there's a lot of resolving and detoxing going on but I personally think you can decide to make a change at any time of year and you get a new do-over ever day so if you haven't had a great beginning to the year then just shake it off and start again.

For those who are interested in Give and Makeup their website is here and anyone wanting to join in the New Year New You Style Project check out all the details on Modern Mummy.

The Morning After the Night Before Make-up - Friday Video

This is called The Morning After the Night Before based on those nights where you accidentally don't go home and need to do your makeup with what you've got in  your bag the next day. There could be a whole series of these as the contents of my makeup bag is always changing although this doesn't really happen to me anymore. If this is something that happens to you a lot you can adjust your makeup bag accordingly with makeup and moisturiser samples, small face wipes and little brushes. From previous experience I usually compensate for a massive hangover and pasty complexion with big flicks with my liquid eyeliner but I refrained in this video...

Liz Earle Botanical Shine Treatment

Ok, ok I am trying to ween myself off gushing about all Liz Earle's products. I mean it's getting a little undignified now isn't it, but I'm allowing myself this one because it involves her hair care range and I've never reviewed any of these products before. I'd lie to say this was going to be incredibly critical and I'd finally found something that the Liz Earle team couldn't do but well... I haven't. Yes again I've found one of their products that's amazing. Sorry.

Liz Earle Botanical Shine Hair Treatment
Liz Earle's Botanical Shine Treatment
The Botanical Shine Treatment is for frizzy, course and unruly hair and you use it as a 10-30 minute treatment after you've shampooed as normal. I'm always wary of products that are for 'course' hair because mine is so fine that often then make it lifeless and flat. My hair can get very damaged if I do not use treatments on it weekly though, because of the amount of colouring it's had done to it over the years so it needs all the help it can get. It has a slight natural curl which goes to frizz when it's not very happy (80% of the time) and I trust Liz so I was desperate to try this. In fact I was trying it 15 minutes after it came through the door.

Of course it smells great and it's reasonably easy to use - I mean you put it on like a conditioner it's just a bit of a faff waiting for the 10 minutes. I put a bath hat on and folded some clothes and cuddled my dog. Then rinsed it well and dried as normal. My hair actually looks better than when I come back from the hairdressers - it looks healthy, sleek, shiny but the treatment has not affected the volume and it smells nice and it even looks thicker. The list of ingredients tells you exactly what everything does which I always like to know - including cotton extract which forms a barrier around the hair smoothing it and helping it reflect more light.

This is going to be a regular feature in my hair routine now and for £12 it's not going to break the bank. If you don't believe me just read the reviews for this - they are fantastic.

Christmas Suggestions #3

Origins Nourishing Treatment MaskYou didn't actually think you'd get away with a Christmas without me mentioning Liz Earle. Regular readers will know that I really love their products so it's pretty tough for me to decide which of their products to recommend specifically for Christmas. But I've finally decided on the Intensive Nourishing Treatment Mask which I've been testing out for the last month and really love, especially now it's got really cold, my face hasn't dried out at all.

This product is suitable for all skin types which is why it's particularly good as a Christmas present, and it's pretty versatile. You can either apply a thick layer to your face and neck after cleansing, put your feet up for 10-15 minutes, and remove with a muslin cloth soaked in warm water, then cleanse. Or just leave it on overnight which is what I've been doing as my skin was so dry with the sudden change of weather. In fact this applied to any problem area and left on overnight is really wonderful. It is just gorgeous, natural and soothing.

The best thing is that a starter kit of this which is a 50ml tube of the mask and a muslin cloth is only £13.50 which is really reasonable. You only need to use this as and when you need it so it should last a nice long time and a 50ml tube on it's own is only £12.75. Very good for sisters in laws, cousins or the difficult to buy for friends xx

P.S worth going to the Liz Earle website just for a glimpse of her cute dog!

Liz Earle Botanical Essence No 1

Yes this is about to be another rave about how much I love Liz Earle, this time I shall be focusing on her perfume, but before I start saying how much I love it I'd like to say how much fun the event at their London store was last Thursday. It was just a lovely evening, I arrived late and stressed and thought I wasn't even going to make it on time and everyone there was just so nice and welcoming and I felt soothed and so pleased that I was able to make it. I had missed the talk by the wonderfully inspirational Lorna McKay but spoke to her about the inspiration behind the fragrance, and the development process with one of the top perfumers in France... I did this whilst sniffing my wrist every two minutes where I had sprayed the fragrance because I loved it and it changes whilst you are wearing it.

Liz Earle Botanical Essence No 1I have quite a hard nose to please - I like grown up musky perfumes rather than anything to sweet or citrusy. Botanical Essence No 1 by Liz Earle hits the nail on the head. Fantastic for summer days when you want something lighter but still with a bit of back bone and a real pick-me-up in the depths of winter. I was really surprised by just how much I loved it - I just could not get enough of it. If you doubt me just check out the reviews for it here. I could also still smell it hours later which is incredibly unusual - my skin seems to absorb perfumes.

It's incredibly hard to review a fragrance as smell is such a personal thing and everyone has different preferences. I think you'd struggle to find people who didn't really like this perfume though. It's much more complex than I was imagining... Bergamot Essential Oil, Damask Rose, Coriander Essential Oil, Vetivert Essential Oil, Nutmeg Essential Oil are just a few of the ingredients and the balance is so perfect I think that's what I found most surprising from this fragrance. It's got the good smell of rose without it being sickly and overpowering, the freshness of Mandarin Essential Oil without being too orangey. I'm not putting this as eloquently as the scent deserves...

This is not just another aromatherapy type smell, this is a proper fragrance - it is grown up, womanly, spirit-lifting and sensuous. The Liz Earle team held nothing back when developing this - I really think you should try it.

What You Need to Know - Liz Earle Botanical Essence No 1
  •  £49
  • 50ml
  • Contains essential oils - Bergamot, Vetiver, Coriander, Lavender, Mandarin, Cedar wood
  • Also contains - Damask Rose, Tonka bean
  • Available in the UK from Liz Earle, John Lewis, QVC

Liz Earle Evening

Tomorrow, Thursday 24th November, between 6.30 and 8pm the Liz Earle team are hosting an evening of fragrance at their London store on the Kings Road. Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know what a fan I am of her products and I can't recommend them enough as fantastic Christmas presents. I know what I'm getting for my sister and I may well top up on the hot cloth cleanser for myself while I'm there.

The evening will feature Lorna McKay, the Liz Earle fragrance expert, who will be sharing her stories from the world of perfume. There will also be a complimentary personalised engraving service for anyone buying a bottle of the Botanical Essence No 1  and there will be delicious refreshments provided to help with your browsing!

I'm really excited - I've never had the chance to try out any of the Liz Earle fragrances before so I am shifting stuff around in my diary to make sure I can be there. All guests take home a little goody bag of treats to try out and there is a chance to win the Liz Earle Ultimate Hamper with a personalised bottle of Botanical Essence No. 1.

Tickets are £10 and redeemable against any purchase on the night . To reserve a place call 01983 813 562 between 9am and 5.30pm. Do it quickly to reserve your place xx

Liz Earle Skin Tint

For those of your who are able to swan about on holiday without any make-up on but may want a little something for the evenings Liz Earle has just the thing. Having been at the forefront of natural skin care for years she's now branching out into 'colour' and the skin tint is the first step. It's an incredibly lightweight, blendable and easy to apply SPF15 foundation that gives fantastic coverage. I wore this throughout the summer when I needed something but didn't want to slap a lot of foundation on and thought it was great.

When I was on holiday in the South of France I actually found that after a day of sitting in the sun, sweating away I wanted it to be even lighter than it was so mixed it with a tiny amount of my normal moisturiser and it still gave complete coverage which was fantastic. Really love this product and can't wait for more in their new make-up range. xx

Liz Earle Gush

Now if you read this blog at all then you'll know I'm a big fan of Liz Earle products but now I'm being wowed not only by the products (and the customer service) but also their website which has a gift finder on it which is just perfect if you can't think what to get for someone. You can choose the price and the type of person and they recommend a product - having struggled to think of what to get a friend who's going away for a month I was recommended the Flight Essentials kit which seems the perfect thing for a long flight and a great size to have in your bag for the whole of your trip. xx

Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic - (Product 2 - Top 10 for 2010)

Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin TonicI know I reviewed a Liz Earle product last month but as they are supposed to be used together I thought it made sense to try out this Instant Boost Skin Tonic immediately after. I was really blown away by the Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser and although my skin feels a lot smoother since using the Instant Boost Skin Tonic I couldn't really see any difference - however, I have been told by a couple of people how great my skin's been looking so it obviously is working!

At first I thought it was a bit drying but actually it's really not and although I always moisturise after using skin tonics I've been using a really small amount just to give a little extra moisture and I'm really impressed with how this has helped my skin look clear and smooth (and it gave me a great excuse to try out the Skin Repair Moisturiser which is great - a tiny amount makes a big difference). The Instant Boost Skin Tonic is so refreshing and contains Vitamin E (which is a great antioxidant and a must for those of you in cities), cucumber and Aloe Vera which soothe and soften the skin and Glycerin which draws water from the atmosphere to the skin. I'm so impressed with all the Liz Earle products that I've tried that I really recommend that you get the Essentials Try Me Kit. It has everything in it that you need for only £21.75 so its also great for presents!
