Top 5 Mascaras

Mascara's. It's an ongoing thing, the quest for the perfect mascara isn't it? And I sort of think that maybe that's the point of it. The journey rather than the discovery itself. I mean. I'm not going to stop trying new mascara's am I? It's all gone a bit existential.

I asked Instagram what they wanted and current mascara favourites was the answer. So here they are. All price ranges are covered and all of these I would buy again. Sadly none of these products are cruelty free. 4 out of the 5 are sold in China which means, there at least, by law their products will be tested on animals. Younique is cruelty free sort of, but they currently can't trace all their products back to definitely not being tested on animals though I think they are in the process of changing this.

Favourite Mascaras

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye - for me pretty much as close to perfect as it's going to get. If you are going to buy a mascara from this list and money is no object (not that it's hugely pricey for a mascara) then let it be this one. It's just the right side of over the top, is properly black and just has a certain oompf. Annoyingly I don't have one at the moment to take a picture of. Bobbi Brown is one of those brands that does quite a few mascara's but as far as I'm concerned this is The One. £24.50 for 5ml so the worse deal for price vs amount but to my mind it's worth it. Read my full review here.

Lancome Hypnose Drama - one of those mascaras that I much prefer when it's been open for a while. A month or so. I tend to buy it, use it, think I've gone off it, fling it to the make-up pit only to return to it in a month or so and find it much improved! Love the thickness and shape of the brush. A great higher end mascara that is still available on most high streets. £25 for 6.5g and the only one that comes in two colours - Excessive Black and Excessive Brown - so a good choice if you prefer a softer look. Maybelline Great Lash Big - don't like the original at all but I love the way this gives volume at the root of the lash and makes the tips look feathery. A rock chick mascara that won't break the bank. May need a touch up by the end of the day but for the price, that's ok. £5.99 for 10ml so by far the best deal. Urban Decay Perversion - Urban Decay are another brand that do a few mascara's and this one is great. Love the brush shape - thick enough but slightly pointed at the end for doing the inner corners. This lasts all day, doesn't get crispy but is the least waterproof mascara I've tried (I did test this by crying a lot in a hospital but still it's the only time I had proper mascara drips. Ever). This comes in a travel size which you can use as a cheap(er) way to try it if you want. The full size is £19.50 for 12ml which isn't bad. Younique Moodstruck Epic Mascara - I was sent this by my friend who promised I would like it and I do. Gives both volume and length without being clumpy. Smells old school chemically which may put some (not me) off but feels really nice on and lasts ages. £19 for 8.9ml which is a little pricey to my mind you can read my full review here.
